Our major ambulatory practice site, located at the Sycamore Primary Care Center, is approximately two blocks west of Sycamore Hospital. Sycamore Primary Care Group (SPCG) is
an Internal Medicine clinic consisting of Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Rheumatology, and Endocrinology. The faculty at SPCG maintain their own private practice, operating
alongside the resident continuity clinic practice. Additional services include an Employee Drop In Care for Kettering employees who have urgent issues.
The resident clinic is organized according to "The Firm" concept to improve patient continuity and coordination of care. The firms consist of 5 to 6 residents that share
responsibilities for a group of patients and collaborate in much the same way as a group of private practice doctors. Thus, while patients are still assigned to a primary
resident to manage their care, residents within a firm cover each other's patients, handling visits, refills or other patient needs, whenever the patient's primary
resident is unavailable.
Resident clinic schedule varies based on rotation. Hence, on elective blocks, the residents are at SPCG weekly, while on inpatient General Internal Medicine, they are only
scheduled for 2-3 clinics per block based on PGY year. Additionally, at every level of training, residents are scheduled for an ambulatory block. PGY1 and PGY3 levels have
a 4 week ambulatory block, and PGY2 levels have a 2 week ambulatory block. Didactic sessions are scheduled regularly throughout the 3 years of training. Other opportunities
available as part of the outpatient training include service at The Good Neighbor House, a clinic for underserved population in the greater Dayton area, and participation
in Quality Improvement projects and initiatives.
