Heart Disease

Are You at Risk?
What is Heart Failure?

Certain risk factors increase your chances of developing heart and artery disease. Some risk factors are things you can't change like age and family history of heart disease. Other risk factors can often be changed or controlled with life style changes and sometimes medications.

Risk Factors Include:
  • High blood pressure
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Carotid artery disease
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Age (men over 45; women over 55)
  • HDL (healthy cholesterol less than 50 in women; less than 40 in men)
  • Family history of premature coronary heart disease
(at an age less than 55 in father or brother; less than 65 in mother or sister)

Almost half of all coronary events occur in people without traditional risk factors.
