While no one can completely prevent lung cancer, a few simple lifestyle choices can make a tremendous difference in maintaining your health. Factors such as your family history, genetics, and childhood exposures can't be changed. It's still important to relay those details to your physicians, however, so they can tailor their recommendations based on your background. With a thorough knowledge of your personal history in hand, your doctor will be extra sensitive to notable symptoms - potentially identifying cancer before it can advance.

While some factors are out of your control, you can do wonders for your health just by eating a healthy diet, exercising three or more times a week, keeping an eye on your weight, and limiting your daily alcohol consumption to one drink per day for women and two per day for men.

The sooner, the better. Male smokers are 23 times more likely than male non-smokers to develop lung cancer, and female smokers have 13 times higher risk than female non-smokers.

If you are still smoking, even occasionally, talk with your doctor about doing whatever is necessary to stop - immediately. Experts predict that lung cancer prevention will take huge strides in the next decade, reflecting decreases in the prevalence of smoking in recent decades.

In addition, non-smokers will benefit from avoiding frequent exposure to secondhand smoke.

Regular exposure to carcinogens, particularly radon, can present a serious risk to people spending a lot of time in certain workplaces and homes. In fact, radon is the second most common cause of lung cancer after smoking. Radon, for example, can accumulate in any building over time.

While odorless gases like radon may seem frightening at first, you can easily check your home for unsafe levels with an inexpensive, DIY test kit. Many homes in the greater Dayton area have undesirably high levels of radon, but bringing radon back to safe levels often consists of just a few affordable home repairs.

In older buildings, asbestos may be a problem due to building materials used during construction. If you work around cancer-causing agents, take wearing your protective gear seriously. Simply being aware of your exposure to pollution or radiation on a daily basis will allow you to make better decisions to protect yourself.

Lung cancer is treatable. Unfortunately, lung cancer is often not found until it has reached an advanced stage.
